Back to School MUST HAVE: How to make Stretchy Bookmarks
These super easy DIY Ribbon Bookmarks are the perfect back to school craft for kids, teens, and adults to make for quick presents, playdate projects, or teacher gifts. They can be made in less than 10 minutes, and you don’t even need a sewing machine! You can now quickly turn to the saved page in your book with style. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions:
- Ribbon- approximately 12″ – 20″, depending on the length you want to make your bookmark. Books come in all different sizes and thicknesses – make a lot of bookmarks, various sizes. **This length also depends on the stretchiness of your rubber bands.**
- Buttons- make sure the buttons are flat, so that your book will close with the bookmark inside
- Rubber bands- you can use regular rubber bands, or hair elastics
“Finish” one end of the ribbon by singeing it with a match or lighter OR rub a little glue on it and let it dry. Either way, the end should be sealed so it won’t fray.
Sew the button on the finished end. If you want to hide the knot, push the needle through the FRONT (right) side of the ribbon and set the button on top of the knot. Then, just stitch through the holes.
Wrap the ribbon/button around a book, then place the rubber band AROUND the button, pull it slightly, and figure out where you need it to attach to the OTHER (unfinished) end of the ribbon.
Cut the ribbon to the appropriate length, then “finish” that end (see step 1), and fold it over the rubber band. Stitch.
That’s it! This is a fun craft that is sure to get your kids back in the school spirit!
